Freeze-frame data: understanding the moment a fault was recorded

Diagnostics & measurements3 min readEcuFiles24

Freeze-frame data adds operating conditions to a trouble code. It helps identify a useful test condition but does not replace data logging.

A snapshot with a limited view

A freeze frame is a stored set of operating data associated with a detected fault. It may include engine speed, load, temperatures or vehicle speed. The available values depend on the vehicle, control unit and diagnostic function. Freeze Frame is the usual English term; some tools also display Failure Records.

The distinction from live data and data logging matters: a freeze frame describes a captured state. It does not automatically show how the values developed beforehand or what happened afterwards. Depending on the system, storage priorities may also determine which fault and associated data remain available.

Read the values in context

Start with the associated DTC and its description. Then check whether the operating conditions match the reported symptom. For example, if a complaint occurs only after an extended drive, a record showing low coolant temperature should not automatically be accepted as its explanation. It may document a different point in time or a different fault.

Units deserve as much attention as the numbers themselves. Temperature may be shown in Celsius or Fahrenheit, while pressure may mean absolute pressure or a differently defined quantity. Calculated load is not the same as accelerator-pedal position either. Keep the original parameter names with an exported record rather than copying isolated numbers.

Prepare a practical assessment

  • Save the code and its data together so their relationship remains clear.
  • Note the reading date, vehicle identification and diagnostic tool used.
  • Add the driver’s description: warm or cold, steady driving or acceleration, a single event or repeated occurrences.
  • Identify missing or unexpected values openly instead of filling gaps with assumptions.

The key question for further testing is: what situation does the workshop need to reproduce to check the hypothesis? Running the engine at a standstill may not answer a question about an event under load. Equally, an extensive road test is not automatically necessary if the relevant condition can already be investigated through a suitable stationary test.

Keep the evidence before making changes

Clearing fault memory can remove associated freeze-frame information. Save the findings before clearing codes, carrying out repairs or changing software. For comparisons, the original record is often more useful than a description reconstructed from memory later.

For an enquiry about your file, briefly summarise the observation and have the relevant diagnostic extract ready. Also identify whether the recording belongs to the original software or an already modified file. This prevents measurements from being compared against the wrong software version.
