Ignition Timing and Knock Control: Targets, Corrections and Fuel
Ignition timing describes when the spark occurs relative to crankshaft position. Figures before or after top dead centre require a clear convention. Advance and retard therefore describe timing within the engine cycle, not general measures of quality. When assessing a petrol calibration, what matters is the timing actually applied under specific operating conditions.
Suitable timing depends on the operating point
The mixture does not finish burning instantaneously when the spark occurs. The position of the combustion event affects how cylinder pressure acts on piston movement. This does not produce a general rule that more ignition advance is always better. Engine speed, load and the actual combustion conditions belong in the assessment.
A base map is also not necessarily identical to the ignition timing delivered during operation. Corrections and other requests can intervene. For a comparison, establish whether a screenshot shows a target or an actually delivered value. Without this distinction, different types of data are easily compared as though they were the same.
What knock control does
Knock is an abnormal combustion phenomenon with characteristic vibrations. Knock sensors detect structure-borne sound on the engine, and the control system evaluates the signals. When a tendency to knock is detected, the controller can retard ignition timing. Detection, correction and the subsequent removal of correction are implemented differently between systems.
A displayed correction initially provides information about a control action. It should not be read without context as proof of one specific cause. Likewise, simply seeing no unusual value does not automatically confirm that every other condition is acceptable. Sensors, channel definitions and the recording all belong in the assessment.
Document fuel and temperature
The fuel grade actually used is essential enquiry information. A project based on a particular fuel assumption cannot be assessed sensibly if actual use differs and this is left unstated. Also document hardware modifications, existing calibration and the conditions in which the behaviour occurs.
A single run at different temperatures is not automatically directly comparable with an earlier recording. A continuous data set containing engine speed, load, ignition timing and available correction channels is more useful. Which additional values are needed should be determined for the specific system.
Turn measured data into a precise enquiry
- Provide the file version and software version together.
- Specify fuel and relevant modifications clearly.
- Supply channels with units and unambiguous names.
- Describe observed behaviour with its timing and conditions.
This information makes a question about a Stage 1 calibration or modified hardware much more specific. In our File Service, this context belongs alongside your file. Knock control is a function to account for, not a general substitute for a suitable base calibration.
