Virtual Read: what a virtual readout actually provides

Reading & tools3 min readEcuFiles24

A virtual readout retrieves a matched stock file from a server. It does not automatically document the vehicle’s currently modified memory contents.

A matching server file rather than a direct memory image

A virtual read uses ECU identification to retrieve a matching stock file from a server. A direct read, by contrast, captures the data read by the selected protocol from the connected control unit. This difference in origin matters when a vehicle has already been modified: a virtual stock file does not automatically include those existing changes.

Treat “Virtual Read” as a description of how a file was obtained. The term alone tells you neither the scope of your backup nor whether the file is suitable for your job without further checks. You must establish whether your current tool and selected protocol actually offer the function.

Make the origin visible in the job record

Explicitly identify a virtual readout as such. A description such as “Stock file from server, identification from today’s job” is more useful than “ori.bin”. Keep the current identification and the message accompanying the supplied file together. If a question arises later, you can trace the identification used when the file was obtained.

  • Has the current software identifier been recorded in full?
  • Was a matching file actually supplied, or was the ECU merely identified?
  • Are earlier modifications known, or explicitly unconfirmed?
  • Which reading type will be communicated to the file editor?
  • What other backups exist independently of this file?

If no matching server file is available, a similarly named file does not replace the missing match. Ask the relevant support team whether another supported method or documented procedure is available for this control unit. Availability for a related vehicle model does not answer that question.

Workshop example: an unknown previous modification

A customer brings in a used vehicle and does not know whether it has previously been tuned. After identification, the tool supplies a virtual stock file. That file can provide the basis for new editing once its match has been confirmed. It is not evidence that the vehicle was in stock condition when it arrived.

Record the unknown history in the job. If an existing custom adjustment must be retained, first establish how its current state can actually be captured. Do not expect a server-side stock file to include earlier customer requirements, individual characteristics or editing steps.

A clear handover to the file service

State that the file comes from a Virtual Read and include the associated identification. Describe the editing objective separately from the vehicle’s previous history. This distinction makes follow-up questions easier and prevents an unknown previous modification from silently being treated as ruled out.

Original file and backup explains the backup aspect. OBD, Bench and Boot covers the choice of access method. The file service provides the vehicle categories for your specific job.
